Tendulkar impresses in India rout
India 350-6 (50 overs) bt Sri Lanka 198 (35.4 overs) by 152 runs
Oct 25 2005
Sachin Tendulkar struck 93 in his first international match for over six months as India thrashed Sri Lanka by 152 runs in the first one-day match in Nagpur.
Tendulkar wore an elbow support but showed no discomfort, playing many lofted shots, and scoring at a run-a-ball to frustrate the Sri Lankan bowlers.
He drove Farveez Maharoof through cover and flicked him past square leg for two fours off the second and third balls he faced.
Chaminda Vaas made an early breakthrough when he had Virender Sehwag (20) caught behind.
But Tendulkar then lofted seamer Dilhara Fernando over mid-on for six and hit him for a straight four.
He swept Muralitharan for four and pushed him to midwicket for single to reach his 70th one-day half-century.
Tendulkar and Pathan kept up a run rate of well over six an over to bring up the 200 in the 31st over before the visitors briefly fought back.
Pathan was caught at mid-off and Tendulkar, suffering from cramp, missed out on his 39th one-day hundred when he edged a wide ball from Maharoof to wicket-keeper Kumar Sangakkara.
Man-of-the-Match Dravid quickly settled down before playing an unusually attacking innings, the highlight of which was a stunning six over point off Vaas.

India vs Sri Lanka at Mohali
Sri Lanka crumble to Pathan swing
India 123 for 2 (20.2 overs) bt Sri Lanka 122 all out (35.4 overs) by 8 wickets
Oct 28 2005
Irfan Pathan took 4-37 as India bowled out Sri Lanka for just 122 in Mohali, and they went on to win the second one-day international with ease.
Kumar Sangakkara was the highest scorer with 27 in a feeble effort from the tourists in the Mohali day-nighter.
Pathan, who found plenty of swing movement throughout, removed Sanath Jayasuriya in the first over and also dismissed three others in the top six. Sachin Tendulkar then hit 70 not out as India got home in the 21st over.
The margin of victory was a healthy eight wickets - Virender Sehwag (38) and Jai Prakash Yadav the only men to be dismissed.
The hosts now lead the seven-match series 2-0 having kicked it off with a similarly one-sided win in Nagpur on Tuesday.
Sri Lanka had the worst start to their day when they lost an important toss and then immediately saw Jayasuriya caught at third man for a duck.
Bouyed by that early success, Pathan then had Mahela Jayawardene picked up at square leg, before removing Sangakkara and Tillakartne Dilshan.
Sangakkara top-edged a pull while Dilshan was trapped lbw first ball by a brilliant inswinger.
Amidst all that, skipper Marvan Atapattu was another Sri Lankan to fail, when he edged his 12th ball faced, from Ajit Agarkar, to the wicket-keeper.
Pathan, who had celebrated his 21st birthday on Thursday, was eventually relieved after eight overs.
That allowed Harbhajan Singh and Yadav to wrap up the tail.
In desperation, Sri Lanka sent out supersub Upul Chandana, with paceman Dilhara Fernando taking no part in the match.
But he was left high and dry on 19 after Muttiah Muralitharan missed with a wild shot to be clean bowled by Harbhajan.

Brilliant Dhoni seals India win
India 303 for 4 (46.1 overs) bt Sri Lanka 298 for 4 (50.0 overs) by 6 wickets
Oct 31 2005
Mahendra Dhoni hit a brilliant century as India beat Sri Lanka in Jaipur to earn themselves a 3-0 stranglehold in the seven-match limited-overs series.
Wicket-keeper Dhoni allowed the hosts to chase a stiff target of 299 at a canter and he hit a national record 10 sixes in his remarkable 183 not out. His score also matched the second highest by an Indian in one-dayers. Earlier, Kumar Sangakkara hit 138 not out in Sri Lanka's 298-4, which also included 71 from Mahela Jayawardene. Sri Lanka won the toss but started slowly. Ajit Agarkar bowled Sanath Jayasuriya for 15 and skipper Marvan Atapattu followed him back to the pavilion, caught behind off Jai Prakash Yadav for 17 off 49 balls. Sangakkara was determined to make his mark on the match, however. He hit two sixes and 13 fours as he blazed to a career-best score in one-day internationals. Jayawardene hit 10 boundaries of his own off 70 balls before slicing a rising delivery from Agarkar to Virender Sehwag at third-man. That dismissal ended a partnership of 151 in 23 overs and a further 70 runs were scored off the final 32 balls as Sangakkara and Farveez Maharoof blazed away. But the stodgy start to the innings had cost Sri Lanka dearly. India nonchalantly dealt with losing Sachin Tendulkar in the first over of their reply as Dhoni and Sehwag put on 92 runs in 14 overs for the second wicket. Rahul Dravid , Yuvraj Singh and Venugopal Rao produced brief cameos as the scoring rate remained impressive. But they all played second fiddle to Dhoni, who was in his element against a Sri Lankan bowling attack including Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan. He collected his eighth six when depositing leg-spinner Upul Chandana over extra cover in the 45th over with an effortless drive and his ninth, over long-off, followed three balls later. Fittingly, the winning hit, from the first ball of the 47th over, was also a Dhoni six - launched over midwicket off Tillakaratne Dilshan. India had lost just four wickets. Dhoni's score was only 11 runs off the best ever in one-day internationals - Saeed Anwar's 194 for Pakistan against India in Madras in 1997.

India vs Sri Lanka at Pune
India beat Sri Lanka to seal series
India 262 for 6 (45.4 overs) bt Sri Lanka 261 all out (49.5 overs) by 4 wickets
Nov 03 2005
Mahendra Dhoni and Suresh Raina put on 82 to guide India to a four-wicket win over Sri Lanka in Pune and a 4-0 lead in the seven-match one-day series.
Captain Marvan Atapattu hit 87 as the tourists were bowled out for 261, with seamer Ajit Agarkar claiming 5-44. India were cruising at 176-3, thanks to 63 from skipper Rahul Dravid , but they then lost three wickets for four runs. But Dhoni (45) hit successive sixes off Russel Arnold to seal victory with 4.2 overs left, while Raina contributed 39. Dravid's decision to put the Lankans in paid off when the in-form Kumar Sangakkara (8) and fellow opener Sanath Jayasuriya (16) were trapped lbw by Agarkar. Things got worse when Upul Tharanga was caught by Agarkar off young paceman Shanthakumaran Sreesanth to leave the visitors on 51-3. Atapattu helped rebuild the innings by putting on 97 for the fourth wicket with Tillekeratne Dilshan (52) and 83 with Arnold (32). But after Dilshan cut spinner Harbhajan Singh to Sachin Tendulkar and Irfan Pathan knocked over Arnold's off-stump, Atapattu soon went. His 100-ball knock came to an end when he miscued a drive back to part-time spinner Virender Sehwag and Agarkar mopped up the tail. India's reply also faltered early on, with Chaminda Vaas bowling Tendulkar (11) and Yuvraj (10) caught off Nuwan Zoysa. Dravid repaired the damage by putting on 78 with Sehwag (48) and 64 with Venugopal Rao (38) but the latter and Pathan were caught behind off Muttiah Muralitharan (3-35) to spark a mini-collapse. In between those dismissals, Dravid failed with an ambitious hook shot off paceman Vaas and Sri Lanka sensed an unlikely way back into the series. But Dhoni and super-sub Raina played patiently before the wicket-keeper twice launched Arnold over long-on to leave them with only pride to play for in the fifth match in Ahmedabad

Dilshan restores Sri Lankan pride
Sri Lanka 286 for 5 (47.4 overs) bt India 285 for 8 (50 overs) by 5 wickets
Nov 06 2005
Tillakaratne Dilshan (81) and Russell Arnold (49) put on an unbroken 131 as Sri Lanka beat India by five wickets in the fifth one-dayer in Ahmedabad.
Gautam Gambhir and captain Rahul Dravid both hit 103 as India totalled 285-8, with Farveez Maharoof taking 4-20.
The tourists were struggling on 155-5 but Dilshan and Arnold kept the score ticking along before accelerating to clinch victory with 14 balls to spare.
Sri Lanka now trail 4-1 with the sixth match in Rajkot on Wednesday. So confident were India of beating their demoralised opponents, that they opted to rest Sachin Tendulkar , Irfan Pathan and Harbhajan Singh. And their opening batsmen soon got among the bowlers after Marvan Atapattu had put them in. Gambhir smacked Dilhara Fernando for two fours as his first over went for 13 and then came down the track to hammer Nuwan Zoysa over square leg for six. Sehwag was more subdued and hit only one boundary in his 19 before Zoysa bowled him and trapped Mahendra Dhoni leg before with successive deliveries. Yuvraj Singh scratched around for three off 21 balls before he was caught at mid-wicket off the bowling of Chaminda Vaas. India were struggling on 69-3 but Dravid battled against severe cramp to put on 128 with Gambhir, who was the more aggressive partner as he eased to his first one-day international hundred off 93 balls. After Gambhir pulled a slower ball to mid-wicket, Venugopal Rao, Suresh Raina and Ajit Agarkar all perished cheaply to Maharoof. But Dravid stepped up his scoring rate as 50 came off the last five overs. The skipper lofted Muttiah Muralitharan over the long-on fence and pulled the expensive Fernando to the mid-wicket boundary to bring up his 11th one-day century. Sri Lanka were soon in trouble as Sanath Jayasuriya's poor run continued when he edged a good Agarkar delivery to Rao at first slip. It got worse as Upul Tharanga was deceived by a slower Agarkar delivery and spooned up a catch to Sehwag, and Kumar Sangakkara edged Rudra Pratap Singh and to a juggling Rao. Atapattu hammered five boundaries in his 39 and Mahela Jawayardene made a patient 37 to rebuild the innings. But when the skipper got a leading edge to one that Murali Kartik tossed up and Jawayardene was run out by Jai Prakash Yadav attempting a risky quick single, the game looked up. However, Dilshan and Arnold paced their innings to perfection, taking ones and twos and punishing a steady diet of loose bowling. A lofted drive down the ground off Singh brought up Dilshan's 50 off 43 balls, which soon became 81 off 67 and silenced a sell-out crowd of 45,000.

Yuvraj, RP Singh lift India to 7-wkt win
India 197 for 3 (34.5 overs) bt Sri Lanka 196 allout (42.5 overs) by 7 wickets
Nov 09 2005
Yuvraj Singh hit an explosive unbeaten 79 as India thrashed Sri Lanka by seven wickets to take a 5-1 series lead.
Yuvraj blasted nine fours and three sixes in an unbroken century stand with Mohammed Kaif to guide India to their target of 197 with 15.1 overs to spare. Earlier, left-arm paceman Rudra Pratap Singh took four wickets as Sri Lanka were bowled out in the 43rd over, Tillakaratne Dilshan top-scoring on 59. Stand-in India skipper Virender Sehwag , deputising for another hamstring victim, Rahul Dravid , elected to put them in after winning the toss. After an opening stand of 44, the tourists lost five wickets in 4.2 overs before Dilshan's third consecutive half-century. He hit nine fours in a 63-ball innings before falling to a direct hit from Yuvraj at point after attempting a quick single. Upul Chandana weighed in with five fours in his 30, before the innings ended with 43 deliveries unused, 19-year-old Singh extracting impressive bounce from the placid pitch in only his third international to earn the Man-of-the-Match award. Acting skipper Sehwag added 22 from 22 balls with four fours before Upul Chanda turned one away from the bat and caught the leading edge.

India vs Sri Lanka at Baroda
Dhoni makes it 6-1 for India
India 245 for 5 (39.3 overs) beat Sri Lanka 244 for 9 (50 overs) by five wickets
Nov 12 2005
Mahendra Singh Dhoni produced another match-winning innings as India wrapped up a 6-1 one-day series win over Sri Lanka at Baroda.
Dhoni, who made an astonishing 183 not out in the third game, hit three sixes and nine fours in his 80 off 73 balls. He was caught at long-off with just five needed for victory as India eased home on 245-5 with 10.3 overs to spare. Russel Arnold (68) and Marvan Atapattu (59) had earlier shared a stand of 133 as Sri Lanka totalled 244-9. It represented a good recovery after the tourists had been reduced to 85-5, but the eventual outcome was never in doubt after India made 109 off the first 14 overs of their reply. Sachin Tendulkar (39), Virender Sehwag and Irfan Pathan (both 35) were responsible for India's flying start. Left-arm seamer Nuwan Zoysa took two wickets to help check their progress and when Mohammad Kaif was bowled by Dilhara Lokuhettige, India were 157-4 but with more than half of their overs remaining. Dhoni was given his head by skipper Rahul Dravid , who was content to play the supporting role while the wicket-keeper/batsman again showed why he is emerging as one of the world's most dangerous one-day players. His fifty took only 46 balls and he celebrated by hoisting balls from Upul Chandana and Lokuhettige over the fence at long-on. Sri Lanka, who went into the game without injured Sanath Jayasuriya and Muttiah Muralitharan, chose to bat first after winning the toss. But they were soon in trouble as Pathan and Ajit Agarkar removed the openers with only 20 on the board. Kumar Sangakkara (32) and Mahela Jayawardene (20) added 57 before Rudra Pratap Singh removed both in successive overs - Jayawardene chipping a catch to short mid-wicket and Sangakkara top edging an attempted pull to Yuvraj Singh at point. The young paceman (3-33) claimed another victim when Tillakaratne Dilshan was caught behind for four to leave Sri Lanka on 85-5. Atapattu and Arnold met the crisis with sensible batting - the latter reaching his half century off 55 balls, just seven more than his captain, whose fifty was his 55th in a one-day international. Man of the Match Pathan (3-38) dismissed both with the first and second balls of the 47th over as Harbhajan Singh took two catches in the deep. And although Vaas added 11 off 10 balls, Sri Lanka's score ultimately proved well short of par with Dhoni maintaining his blistering form to finish the series as its highest scorer with 346 runs at an average of 115.
