Galle, Day 5: Muralitharan takes 800th wicket as Sri Lanka beat India
July 22, 2010
World record-holder Muttiah Muralitharan retired with 800 Test wickets on Thursday as Sri Lanka thumped India by 10 wickets in their first match. Murali needed eight wickets in his final Test to reach 800. After five in the first innings he claimed three in the second to finish with match figures 8-191.After being forced to follow-on yesterday, the Indian batting order was in a state of complete collapse when dogged resistance from the likes of VVS Laxman, who scored a fifty, and Ishant Sharma prevented an innings defeat. They began the final day 63 behind at 181-5, and were all for 336, with Murali taking the final wicket as number 11 Pragyan Ojha edged to slip. Tillakaratne Dilshan and Tharanga Paranavitana stayed unbeaten at 68 and 23 to help Sri Lanka register their seventh 10-wicket win in Test cricket.India, the top-ranked Test side, have not won a Test series in Sri Lanka since 1993.

July 21, 2010
Muttiah Muralitharan (5-63) and Lasith Malinga combined beautifully to leave India on the brink of a big defeat in the Galle Test. India conceded a huge first innings lead of 244 runs in the first innings, and then lost opening batsman Gautam Gambhir immediately after Sri Lanka enforced follow-on on India. They are now trailing Sri Lanka by 63 runs, with just VVS Laxman and MS Dhoni left among the top-order batsmen.
