IND v SL, T20, Colombo: Pathan brothers lead India to Twenty20 win
Feb 10, 2009
Brothers Irfan and Yusuf Pathan plundered 59 runs off 25 balls as world champions India posted a thrilling three-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the one-off Twenty20 international match at Colombo on Tuesday.
India were struggling at 115-7 chasing a 172-run target before the Pathan duo steered their side home with four balls to spare in the first-ever Twenty20 game in Sri Lanka.
Yusuf, who had earlier taken two wickets with his off-spin, remained unbeaten with a 10-ball 22 with the help of two sixes and one boundary. He was named man of the match for his all-round display.
His younger brother Irfan finished the match when he swung paceman Lasith Malinga over mid-wicket for a six. He cracked two sixes and as many boundaries in his 16-ball 33 not out.
"There are a lot of youngsters in our team and stiff matches like these are a great learning experience. Their spinners bowled really well and made our batsmen struggle," said India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Sri Lanka skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan (61) earlier smashed a maiden half-century to help his side set a challenging target after being dropped in the opening over. He had yet to open his account at that stage.
IND v SL, T20, Colombo: India 174-7 (19.2 overs) beat Sri Lanka 171-4 (20.0 overs) by 3 wickets
IND v SL, T20, Colombo: India has edge over depleted Lanka in Twenty20 tie
Feb 10, 2009
On a high after demolishing Sri Lanka 4-1 in the just-concluded ODI series, world champions India will have a distinct edge over the depleted hosts when the sides lock horn in the first Twenty20 international cricket match on Lankan soil.
Sri Lanka will hope to carry forward some of the confidence regained after winning the fifth and final match but yesterday's defeat was just a blip on the Indian team's radar after Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men dictated terms for the most part of the series.
With Sri Lanka deciding to rest key players, including regular captain Mahela Jayawardene, deputy Kumar Sangakkara and the spin twins of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis, Tillakaratne Dilshan will have an unenviable task at hand when he walks out for the toss.
Having achieved the primary target of clinching the ODI series, the Indian team would be in a relaxed state of mind and tomorrow's match would be an ideal opportunity for the stroke players to light up the stadium with batting pyrotechnics.
A victim of serial umpiring blunders, Sachin Tendulkar has already returned home but going by the kind of form Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir are in, the Lankans bowlers will have tough time taming the Delhi duo.
